No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service…..You Didn’t Say Anything About Pants

Dear Pantless Grocery Shopper, I had to take a double, triple and quadruple take when I saw you cruising the aisles of the grocery store wearing, what appeared to be, only a dress shirt. It was is I was thrust into a stereotypical nightmare where I was out wanding in public without any pants on; except that this had to be your nightmare. With sleeves rolled up to your elbows, top three buttons undone and a gold chain resting comfortably on a nest of graying chest hair, you acted as "it ain't no thang" to drop trou and buy some milk. I eyed you quizzically wandering down the chips and cracker aisle when it happened. Without hesitation you reached up to the top shelf as your shirt inevitably rode higher and higher until . . . . . . (pause for effect) I saw you wearing the shortest shorts I have ever seen a man wear. Fear is only as powerful as the individual makes it. But shorts or no shorts, I wouldn't have the balls (pun fully intended) to buy my groceries wearing the outfit that you seemed so comfortable in. Keep truckin'.

It’s Like Rain On Your Wedding Day…

Dear Tall Skinny White Kid,
I found it really ironic and funny that you were wearing a t-shirt with

The Gift of Giving vs. Obnoxious A-Hole’s

Dear Giving Partiers, You really are good at sharing. The fact that you would allow the entire block to hear your music is pretty generous. A giving spirit is an amazing quality to have; but can I make a simply suggestion? You may want to confirm that your gift will be well received. Otherwise it's a bit like giving milk to someone who's lactose intolerant. -Dave

The foundations of a father = The mirror is a lying bastard

Dear Blind Walker, I know you're deflated and your life may seem like one big disappointment after another. I've spent a lot of time reflecting on your life; rather the part I've been privileged to be part of and I can tell you that it deserves far more than being shrugged off as a disappointment. The wake of your life is immensely rich and reaches out to touch the far corners of the earth. From North America to Europe, Africa to Asia and back again the seeds of your life will live for generations to come. I have watched as your family has grown from 6 to 13; of which you are the solid foundation. There is much that I have learned from watching you over the years. But none have been more impactful than seeing you take every step of your journey by faith; not relying on your own sight. The mirror can often be a lying bastard; in these hard days, don't trust it. Simply step to one side and see the multitude of faces standing behind you. You are the greatest man I know. -Dave

Don’t Forget To Chew, Life is Too Short

Dear Choking Brother In-Law, You sure made Father's Day eventful. Being witness to that incident reminded me, yet again, how fragile life actually is. You never when it will all come to an end. I'm thankful that Sunday was not that day because this world would not be the same without you. (Maybe next time chew instead of inhaling your food).

Music, Pellet Guns, and Shirtless Volleyball at Dawn

Dear Rowdy Neighbor, I'd be lying if I told you that I miss seeing you around. That's probably because when I do see or hear you it's in the middle of the night while you're throwing a party & shooting your automatic pellet gun at god knows what in your backyard. Does it make me a bad person that I'd rather not see you? I will admit though, the 5am shirtless volleyball game was classic.

The bigger you are, the harder you fall (and that’s not such a bad thing)

Dear Weeping Giant, I have never lost a best friend so I won't pretend like I know what you've been through - what you're going through. What I can do is empathize. That is the beauty of the human soul: it's connected to those around it. I may not know you, but your soul speaks volumes of the pain you feel for losing a best friend. I can see the pain through your clenched teeth and tearful eyes. I can see regret and longing in your twisted brow. But most of all I can see the joy of personally knowing his brilliance and his heart tugging the corner of your mouth into a slight, knowing smile. That is unmistakable. In those brief moments when I saw you I knew the world had lost a good man. Your friend was not the first, nor will he be last. With every other soul that leaves us behind, we will mourn the loss but more importantly will celebrate their life: together as one connected heart. -Dave

You’re not a victim

One year ago today…

Dear Black Jetta Driver, Red lights weren't invented to intentionally make you late for work, I promise. Instead of driving through them like they don't exist, try leaving your house 5 minutes earlier tomorrow. You'll see they're not really out to get you. -Dave

Keep Your Head Up

So seeing as The Daily Letter turned 1 year old today, and the fact that all of my posts from the very beginning have disappeared, I figured I’d revisit the first posts from “One Year Ago Today”.

Dear J-Walker, I you fell the need to step into the street while I'm driving down the road, please keep your head up to avoid sending us both into cardiac arrest. -Dave

Happy Birthday Jamie

Today’s letter goes out to Jamie (@InspiredMess) as it was her birthday on Wednesday. I did actually send this to her on time but I’m finally posting it now that everything is back up and running. If you haven’t yet, wish her a happy belated birthday.

Dear Birthday Girl, Today marks the day that the world changed forever. It marks the start of an era when an inspired mess reaches out and leaves a lasting imprint on ever life that she touches. I'm not sure if growing up you dreamt of encouraging and inspiring a kid from Canada, but that's exactly what you've done. Your warmth and openness shine through every activity you plan for your family and every blog post you share. Today is your birthday and we are all so lucky to be within your reach.
